DISPLAY ADS - Our goal is to provide a wide spectrum of options so that all sizes of businesses can effectively use Natural Awakenings to promote their products and services.

  • SIZES: Ads range in size from a 2 page spread to a 1/12 page small square, with many sizes and orientations in between.

  • COLOR: Prices are for black and white with color available for a 25% surcharge for ads ¼ page or larger. Research shows that color ads can be 40% more effective than black and white. Because we use a web-based press only certain pages can be color. Please ask your ad sales manager for details.

  • FORMAT: Camera-Ready copy must be submitted in one of the following formats

  • 1. 300 dpi, grayscale TIFF or EPS file for PC
    2. Adobe Acrobat PDF file, distilled 'press optimized' with all fonts embedded
    3. Native application files, PC PageMaker files only and ALL files needed for remote printing. This includes the original file, and linked graphics and all fonts.

  • DESIGN: Prices are for ads ready to print in a high resolution format. If your designer cannot utilize one of these formats we have experienced freelance ad designers who can design your ad for a nominal 25% surcharge. (Note if more than 2 changes the design fee may increase.) Also, if you change copy or redesign your ad at a later date, a 10% surcharge may apply.

  • COPY: We are happy to review and advise you as to the suitability/appeal of your emailed copy at no additional charge.

  • PHOTOS and GRAPHICS - in the following formats

    1. High-quality photos (to be scanned), no printed material or downloaded material from the web.
    2. Scanned at 300 dpi and saved as PC Tiff or EPS files.

  • AD PLACEMENT: Only full page ads are able to specify specific placement (subject to our layout requirements and availability). Other size ads are usually moved around to different sections of the magazine each month to be fair to all advertisers and to accommodate changing content. Being in the front of the magazine is equally effective as being in the calendar section for example.

  • LENGTH OF CONTRACT: In general we recommend you advertise for at least 12 months unless your ad is event/date specific. We offer a discount for 12 month contracts based on consecutive months of advertising. Think of how busy you are and how long it takes you to "take action" on something you have been meaning to do. The same applies to potential clients. Each month your ad is seen, it reminds them that it's something they're interested in and they think about doing it. But realistically it can take a busy person 6 months or longer before they "get around to picking up the phone." 12 month ads in Natural Awakenings have a 95% renewal rate because they work.

  • WHY A DISPLAY AD VS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE GUIDE (CRG): A display ad can use images, colors, various typefaces, logos and of course words/bullets/phrases to convey a feeling, image, or brand that a CRG, with its limited format, cannot. We offer a CRG discount to display advertisers to make doubly sure their ad gets seen as the CRG lists what page the ad appears on. The CRG in effect reinforces the power of the display ad.

  • ELEMENTS OF A GOOD AD: A good ad, in general, conveys a clear, uncluttered image and utilizes a strong visual to draw readers' attention to it. A company logo is often not enough. A smiling headshot or other photo can instantly convey what your ad is about before any copy is noticed.

  • 1. A good headline is essential as is the right amount of copy with information conveyed in bullet form vs paragraphs as much as possible. Typeface size must also be large enough so it is seen and doesn't "get lost".

    2. The copy should convey potential benefits/relief from pain/problems and provide a reason for potential clients to "take action". The amount of copy should not overwhelm the reader-rather it should be just enough to intrigue their interest so they want to pick up the phone or go to your website to learn more.
